ET 55 rims: Offset for precisely tailored wheel designs

ET 55 rims have an offset of 55 millimetres. The offset describes the distance between the centre of the rim and the contact surface on the wheel hub. With a positive value of 55 millimetres, the wheel sits further inwards than a rim with a smaller offset, assuming all other dimensions are identical.

A comparatively high offset is often found on vehicles whose suspension and bodywork are very precisely tailored to specific rim dimensions. One of the aims here is to ensure sufficient clearance from the outer edge of the wheel arch. At the same time, the wheel must not come into contact with the strut, axle components or brake components on the inside.

ET 55 and the actual wheel position

The ET value alone does not determine whether a rim is suitable. In particular, the rim width significantly alters the actual position of the inner and outer rim edges. The rim diameter, bolt circle, hub bore, load capacity and tyre size must also be compatible with the vehicle in question.

Changing to different rim dimensions may also alter the track width. Therefore, only combinations that have the necessary approval documentation should be used. An ABE, ECE approval or a corresponding Homologation certificate specifies the vehicles for which the rim is intended and any applicable requirements.

Alloy rims with an ET of 55

Alloy rims with an ET of 55 are primarily found in near-standard and vehicle-specific wheel solutions. Brands such as Ronal, Borbet, CMS, Dezent, Autec and Alutec offer numerous models with offsets in this range.

As well as classic silver rims, variants in black, anthracite or with polished surfaces are available. From simple five-spoke wheels to delicate multi-spoke designs, the selection is correspondingly diverse.

Steel rims as a robust solution

Steel rims are also available with an offset of 55 millimetres. Suppliers such as ALCAR, MW and Accuride stock steel wheels for various Passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

Whilst the focus with alloy wheels is often on appearance and personalisation, Steel rims impress above all with their robust build, functional design and often lower purchase costs.
