Maxxis bicycle tyres
MAXXIS began developing bicycle tyres in 1967. Since then, the former bicycle manufacturer has grown into an international corporation, which supplies products to more than 170 countries. The range has been expanded to include high-performance tyres for various vehicles – including tyres for motorcycles and cars. In spite of this, MAXXIS has never neglected the development and production of bicycle tyres.
The MAXXIS plants produce more than 50 million tyres each year. Qualified engineers work within the MAXXIS development centre to expand the product range, and to set new benchmarks. To ensure that tyres that are eventually brought to market are reliable, the products are first subjected to thorough testing – from professional racers among others.

MAXXIS offers a wide range, that considers the differing requirements in various cycling disciplines. The product range includes bicycle tyres for everyday use and for racing bikes, as well as tyres for other forms of cycling.
MAXXIS has suitable tyres for the following bike styles:
- Mountainbikes (MTB)
- Trekking and city bikes
- Cyclocross and gravel
- Road bike
- Fat-Bike, BMX, Trial
Sophisticated tyre technology
When it comes to technology and equipment, MAXXIS boasts its own expertise. The manufacturer is transparent with regard to the properties of its carcasses and bead cores. MAXXIS produces bicycle tyres with both single-layer and double-layer carcasses, whereby one layer is considered standard – this refers to the fabric layer that surrounds the bead core.
The construction can differ depending on the tyre model. In terms of the bead core, there are three variants: the clincher bead core for clincher tyres, the folding bead core for folding tyres, and special bead cores for tubeless tyres. The tubeless racing bike tyres from MAXXIS are coated with an internal butyl rubber layer and have a carbon bead.
Of interest to E-bike riders: all MAXXIS cycling tyres can be used on E-bikes however, only up to a speed of 25 km/h. Those who like to cycle at higher speeds will need to fit their bikes with special tyres.
Puncture protection, with MAXXIS tyres
MAXXIS assigns a total of 7 different puncture protection labels to its tyres. The special puncture protection layers are designed to meet varying requirements. The materials used also include Kevlar fibre from DuPont.
The following protective layers are used by MAXXISD:
MAXXSHIELD: combines SilkShield with Kevlar
Composite
KEVLAR INSIDE: puncture protection layer with embedded Kevlar fibres
KEVLAR COMPOSITE K2: exclusive MAXXIS fabric with Kevlar fibres
SILKSHIELD: all-round protective layer made from the Silkworm protective layer developed by MAXXIS
NYLON BREAKER: reinforces the carcass and thus offers greater protection against punctures
MAXXPROTECT: tough, fibre-based material between the tread and the carcass,
The most important component of the tyre: the rubber compound used for the tread
The composition of the running surface rubber has a crucial; influence on the performance of a tyre. Bicycle tyres that look identical on first glance can be suitable for entirely different areas of use if a different rubber compound is used. Over the years, MAXXIS has developed and improved various rubber compounds, and always demands the highest quality. The compounds are divided into three categories: Triple Compound, Dual Compound, and Single Compound.
3C TRIPLECOMPOUND RACING BIKE: a harder silica compound in the middle, for low roll resistance, with two softer compounds at the sides for better grip when cornering
3C TRIPLECOMPOUND MTB: a harder base compound in combination with two softer compounds
3C MAXX SPEED: a particularly durable compound, designed for minimum roll resistance
3C MAXX TERRA: a smooth-running compound for optimal grip on descents
3C MAXX GRIP: a compound for downhill riding, stronger grip and very good damping properties
SUPERTACKY: a base compound, combined with a Supertacky compound for extreme grip
EXCEPTION: a particularly light and durable compound for exceptional grip, with low roll resistance
MAXXPRO: finely ground components for good damping properties, low roll resistance, the avoidance of lug tears, and a long service life.
MPC: the all-rounder of the rubber compounds
Conclusion: with MAXXIS, there are a wide range of materials available
MAXXIS offers tyres for most areas of use, both for various forms of competitive cycling, and for everyday use. On account of the numerous rubber compounds, finding the perfect composition for your own tyres is simple. In combination with the various tyre types, the puncture protection and carcass technology can be selected in order to consider the cyclists individual requirements with regard to tyre properties.
