When you talk about the early days of travel on two wheels, Dunlop are not to be overlooked. In 1888, John Boyd Dunlop developed the world's first air-filled tyres. His motivation? To give racing cyclists an advantage. Nowadays the focus is on motorised two-wheel vehicles, however, the goal remains the same: gaining competitive advantage through innovation.

Right from the very beginning, being competitive has been part of our history. In 1889, Willie Hume was the first to win a race on Dunlop tyres.

Fast-forward to present day and Dunlop tyres are still claiming many victories, e.g. at the Isle of Man TT, the Endurance World Championship (EWC), or the MXGP. What we learn under racing conditions, we transfer to our road tyres. For more confidence and enhanced ride pleasure.

Ever since John Boyd Dunlop's fantastic invention, we have been pioneers in tyre technology. And we are continually developing, with a view to continuously improving performance, for increased safety and control while riding. Innovations are first tested on the racetrack, under demanding racing conditions. The result: high-performance road tyres, that convey a safe ride sensation from the first few metres. Just ride.

Why Dunlop?

On the podium for more than 130 years

On 18 May 1889, history was written when racer Willie Hume was victorious in Belfast. He won 4 out of the 5 races on the first pneumatic tyres - developed by John Boyd Dunlop.

Dunlop is still breaking records to this day. Dunlop tyres were used for the first 100 mph lap record in 1969. Since then, we have set 8 speed records at the Isle of Man TT, the most recent seeing a speed of 135 mph clocked by Peter Hickman in 2018.

First class grip and high ride safety

We are continually driving the development of new technologies forwards - for more grip, more control, and a safe feel on the bike. Tests are first performed on the racetrack, under demanding racing conditions. Technological developments such as Multi-Tread, the NTEC carcass, or the jointless belt (JLB) have all been realised as a result of our passion for motorsport.
