MTB tyres: grip & puncture protection as standards
Whether on the trail or on the road – traction and directional stability are particularly important attributes in MTB tyres. For these are required to adapt optimally to different conditions, and to withstand loose ground surfaces and varying weather conditions. Tight corners, stoney, sandy or muddy ground? High-quality mountain bike tyres have flexible lugs, which adapt quickly to changes in direction, and simultaneously ensure stability and a safe, controlled ride when off-road.
In order that they can adapt optimally to the ground surface and provide ideal grip, especially when off-road, mountain bike tyres have large lugs, set slightly wider apart. Downward pressure causes the lugs to literally dig down into even fairly firm ground surfaces - and on top of that you get a fun and safe ride!
How wide are mountain bike tyres?
As a general rule, the wheel size for mountain bikes is between 27.5 and 29 inches. Here, 27.5-inch tyres fall within the mid-range, while 29-inch tyres are considered large MTB tyres. They are between 57 and 76 millimetres wide, which corresponds to 2.25 to 3 inches. How large the wheel is will depend on the frame and fork of the mountain bike. Depending on the area of application, there is a wide range of bicycle tyres available. For bikes designed to cover distances (as opposed to performing stunts), wider tyres offering more control will often also be suitable.
MTB tyres: from Hardtail to BMX
Depending on the distance you want to cover and the surface properties, the most popular subcategories of mountain bikes and their tyres are perfect for any bike adventure. Those who really want to let loose and are looking for that adrenaline kick on long tours and on loose surfaces, should go for a Hardtail mountain bike with all-terrain tread. The "original mountain bike" is light and has a suspension fork with a spring deflection of approximately 100 millimetres, without rear wheel suspension. Its wheel size is between 27.5 and 29 inches.
For those who prefer riding freeride, downhill, or uphill routes, the Fully mountain bike is the ideal companion. With its adjustable damper and a spring deflection of between 80 and 240 millimetres, it is ideally designs for varied routes with climbs and descents. It is not suitable for extended rides on account of its rather high weight in comparison to the Hardtail. Its wheel size falls within the range from 27.5 to 29 inches – and its deep mountain bike tread profile is also well suited to its area of application.
For tricks and jumps, BMXes (short for Bicycle Motocross) are the suitable candidate. These have no gear shift or suspension, as they are not designed to cover long distances. They typically feature higher handlebars and a wide pedal, with wheel sizes generally around 20 inches. Click through our wide range of MTB tyres and find the ideal bicycle tyre for your next tour!
