7x16 rims: a well-balanced size for many vehicle classes
7x16 rims are a popular choice for compact cars, saloons, estate cars and smaller SUVs. The designation refers to a rim width of 7 inches and a rim diameter of 16 inches. The slightly greater width often allows tyres with a wider tread to be fitted, which can give the vehicle a more imposing appearance.
However, whether a 7x16 wheel actually fits a particular vehicle depends on further technical specifications. Key factors include bolt circle, offset, centre bore, load capacity and the permitted tyre size. You should therefore always check the vehicle documents and the wheel’s type-approval certificates before purchasing.
Alloy or steel wheels in 7x16
In the 7x16 size, it is primarily alloy wheels that are available. They impress with a wide range of designs and finishes. Popular choices include classic five-spoke rims, sporty double-spoke designs and delicate multi-spoke wheels. Colour options such as silver, black, anthracite or high-gloss finishes allow for a personalised match to the vehicle.
Steel rims are also available in this size, although the range is usually more limited than for narrower sizes. Steel wheels are characterised by their robust construction and often low purchase price. For this reason, they are frequently used as winter wheels. Alloy wheels may also be suitable for the colder months, provided they are explicitly marked as winter-suitable and feature a durable coating.
Well-known brands and key selection criteria
Well-known manufacturers of 7x16 alloy wheels include, amongst others, Borbet, Dezent, Rial, CMS, Autec, Alutec and Ronal. The range extends from understated replacement wheels to sporty designs intended to enhance the vehicle’s appearance.
Steel rims are offered, for example, by ALCAR, Accuride and MW. For both types of rim, the following points should be taken into account:
-
Bolt circle and centre bore: must fit the wheel mounting exactly.
-
Offset: affects the position of the wheel within the wheel arch.
-
Load capacity: must be sufficient for the vehicle’s weight and axle load.
-
Certificate or approval: forms the basis for permissible fitting.
