Motor oil with viscosity 5W-20

Engine oil with a viscosity of 5W-20 is a particularly low-viscosity oil that has been developed for modern engines designed for high fuel efficiency and optimum performance. The viscosity of an engine oil describes its fluidity at different temperatures. The first number, ‘5W’, indicates how well the oil flows at low temperatures, where ‘W’ stands for winter. A low value such as 5W means that the oil remains fluid in cold conditions and circulates quickly through the engine, which minimises wear during cold starts.

The second number, ‘20’, indicates the viscosity at operating temperature. This low number indicates that the oil remains relatively thin even at high temperatures, which reduces frictional resistance in the engine and thus contributes to fuel economy. 5W-20 engine oil is often recommended in vehicles designed to maximise fuel efficiency, such as hybrid vehicles or certain models from manufacturers such as Ford, Honda and Chrysler.

The use of 5W-20 engine oil is particularly useful in regions where temperatures are not extremely high, as the oil may offer slightly less protection in hot conditions than higher viscosity oils such as 5W-30 or 10W-40. Overall, however, 5W-20 is an excellent choice for vehicles optimised for daily city driving or long-distance driving in moderate temperatures, as it protects the engine while helping to save fuel.
