Offset (ET) 29 rims: Offset and mounting position

ET 29 rims have an offset of 29 millimetres. The offset describes the distance between the geometric centre of the rim and the contact surface on the wheel hub. With a positive offset of 29 millimetres, this contact surface lies outside the rim centre.

Compared to a rim with a higher offset, an ET 29 rim sits further out in the wheel arch, assuming all other dimensions are identical. In contrast, a rim with a lower offset sits correspondingly further in. Even slight differences in the ET value can visibly alter the position of the wheel and affect clearance, wheel arch coverage and chassis geometry.

Technical requirements for ET 29

Whether a rim with ET 29 fits a vehicle does not depend solely on the offset. Equally relevant are rim width, rim diameter, bolt circle, centre bore, load capacity and tyre size.

An unsuitable combination can result in the tyre or rim coming into contact with chassis components, the brake caliper or the bodywork. There must be sufficient clearance even when the steering is turned fully and during suspension compression. The vehicle documents, as well as the ABE, ECE approval or the component certificate for the respective rim, are therefore decisive.

Alloy and steel rims with ET 29

Rims with ET 29 are available both as alloy rims and as steel rims. With alloy wheels, there is a wide range of designs to choose from, ranging from classic five-spoke rims to sporty double-spoke designs and delicate multi-spoke wheels. Finishes in silver, black, anthracite or bronze allow for a personalised match to the vehicle.

Steel wheels tend to have a simpler design and are frequently used for winter tyres, older vehicles or cost-effective replacement options. Their robust construction and generally lower price are among their key advantages.
