ET 43 rims: technical classification of the offset

ET 43 rims have an offset of 43 millimetres. This value describes the distance between the centre of the rim and the surface where the wheel contacts the wheel hub. With a positive offset of 43 millimetres, the contact surface is situated correspondingly outside the geometric centre.

The offset primarily influences the lateral position of the wheel. For the same rim width, a rim with an ET of 43 sits further inwards than a version with, for example, an ET of 35. This alters the clearances to the mudguard, suspension strut and braking system. For a harmonious and technically correct wheel position, therefore, it is not only the ET value that is decisive, but the entire rim geometry.

Fit depends on several factors

An ET 43 rim may be suitable for many modern passenger cars, but cannot be universally assigned to a specific Vehicle type. Other important factors include Rim width, Diameter, Bolt circle, centre bore, load capacity and the intended tyre size.

Particularly with wider wheels, even a small change in the Offset can determine whether there is sufficient clearance from chassis components. Similarly, the outer wheel cover must comply with the relevant specifications. Anyone wishing to fit a rim size other than the standard specification should therefore carefully check the ABE, ECE documentation or the relevant parts certificate.

Alloy rims with ET 43

For alloy rims, ET 43 is available in various sizes and designs. Manufacturers such as Borbet, Ronal, CMS, Autec, Dezent and Alutec offer numerous alloy rims with offsets in this range.

The design options range from understated five-spoke rims to dynamic double-spoke designs and finely detailed multi-spoke designs. Colour options in silver, black, grey or bronze, as well as polished surfaces, allow for individual adaptation to the vehicle’s style.

Steel rims as a functional alternative

Steel rims are also offered with an offset of 43. Unlike aluminium wheels, the focus here is less on design and personalisation and more on functionality, durability and cost-effectiveness.
