ET 51 rims: high offset for near-standard applications

ET 51 rims have an offset of 51 millimetres. This describes the distance between the centre of the rim and the contact surface on the wheel hub. A relatively high positive ET value means that, for the same rim width, the wheel sits further inwards within the wheel arch than a rim with a smaller offset.

ET 51 is found in particular on vehicles whose chassis and wheel arches are designed for a wheel position that is close to the standard specification. This value helps to determine the clearance to the mudguard, but must not be considered in isolation. Equally important is the clearance on the inside to the strut, axle components and braking system.

Considering rim width and offset together

An ET 51 rim can vary considerably depending on its width. A narrow rim requires less space in the wheel arch than a significantly wider version with the same ET value. Therefore, rim width, diameter, bolt circle, centre bore, load capacity and tyre size must all be checked together.

Even with rims that appear similar, there may be differences in the spoke design. Particularly with large brake calipers, the specific design determines whether there is sufficient clearance. Vehicle-specific approvals and authorisation documents for the respective rim are therefore binding.

Alloy rims with ET 51

For alloy rims, an ET of 51 is primarily found on vehicle-specific and near-series rims. Manufacturers such as Ronal, Borbet, CMS, Dezent, Autec and Alutec offer numerous alloy rims with Offsets in this range.

The designs range from understated spoke wheels to sportier Multi-spoke and double-spoke rims. Finishes in silver, black, anthracite or a high-gloss finish allow for a variety of visual accents.

Steel rims with an offset of 51

Steel rims are also available with the corresponding offsets. They are frequently used for winter tyres, spare wheels or functional applications. Suppliers such as ALCAR, MW and Accuride stock steel rims for numerous vehicle models.

Whilst the focus with alloy wheels is on design and personalisation, steel rims impress above all with robustness, simple construction and cost-effective purchase.
