Offset (ET) 25 rims: The significance of the offset

ET 25 rims have an offset of 25 millimetres. This value describes the distance between the geometric centre of the rim and its contact surface on the wheel hub. With a positive offset of 25 millimetres, the mounting surface lies outside the centre of the rim.

In direct comparison to a rim with a higher offset, a wheel with an ET of 25 sits further out in the wheel arch, even if the width is identical. Compared to a rim with a lower offset, it sits correspondingly further inwards. As a result, the offset affects not only the appearance but also the clearance and the load on various chassis components.

Technical suitability for the vehicle

Offset must never be considered in isolation. Whether an ET of 25 is suitable for a vehicle also depends on rim width, rim diameter, bolt circle, centre bore, load capacity and tyre size. The design of the braking system and the available space in the wheel arch also play an important role.

An unsuitable rim may rub against the brake caliper, chassis components or the bodywork. Likewise, the prescribed tyre tread coverage must be ensured. The vehicle documents, as well as the ABE, ECE approval or the parts certificate for the respective rim, are therefore decisive.

Rims with ET 25 are available as both alloy rims and steel rims. Alloy rims offer a wide selection of sporty, classic or elegant designs. Finishes in silver, black, anthracite or bronze allow for a personalised match to the vehicle.

Steel rims are generally more understated in design and are often chosen for winter tyres, commercial vehicles or cost-effective replacement options. Their robust construction and usually lower purchase price are among their key advantages.
